|
|
|

| |

On a plane, as space is limited, and passengers find it difficult to get up and walk about persons can suffer from DVT. |
| |
| Who's at risk from DVT? |
| |
- People over 40
- Any past or family history of DVT
- Recent surgery, particularly abdominal or leg surgery, or injury to the knees or hips
- Recent childbirth or pregnancy
- Cancer treatments or cancer sufferers
- Heart or circulation problems
- Obesity
|
| Avoiding DVT? |
| |
- Drink lots of water during the flight and avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks
- Wear looseclothing
- Exercise the muscles of your lower legs and stretch your feet every hour - try, if you can to get up and walk about the cabin
- Don't place anything under the seat in front of you so you can stretch
- Walk about the cabin every 1-2hrs
- Wear graduated compression stockings often known as ‘flight socks’ – particularly important if you are in a high-risk category.
|
| Symptoms of DVT? |
| |
DVT in itself can be uncomfortable but the biggest concern is when a piece of the blood clot, called a pulmonary embolus, breaks off and travels to the right side of the heart. This can cause heart problems or even heart attack.
Sometimes there are no symptoms and it's this that makes DVT so dangerous.
However, some symptons can include: |
| |
- Aching or soreness in the calf
- Swelling in the calf or ankles
- Slight fever and feeling unwell
- No symptoms may start for several days or even weeks
|
| Suspecting DVT? |
| |
If you suspect DVT see a doctor as soon as possible - the treatment is relatively easy and simple to apply in most cases.
If you're on holiday speak to your holiday rep or call your airline for help and advice. |

Jet lag is mainly caused because the body's clock is out of sync with the real time.
It can also be worse when several time zones have been travelled through and also when travelling east.
Normally jet lag passes after a couple of days, however, to try and prevent jet lag try some of the following: |
| |
- Try and move your meals to 1-2 hours closer to the time you would be eating in the Country you're travelling to. Also sleep nearer to these times also.
- Once you take off reset your watch
- Drink plenty of water and eat small meals
- Caffeine drinks can help mask fatigue if you are suffering badly
- If suffering from insomnia try a herbal sleeping tablet or consult your doctor if you require sleeping medication
- Have an power nap during the day, but just for half an hour
- For centuries people have used Ginseng to fight fatigue
